The area is the second largest in the Province in terms of the number of Lodges but having the smallest number of Lodge premises
There are 48 Lodges housed in 9 Masonic Halls and one Lodge using rented accommodation.
As at 31st December 2013 there were 1699 Brethren in area 5 out of a total of 6816 in the Province representing 25% of the total membership.
The area covers, Leeds, Pudsey, Castleford, Pontefract, Wakefield, Morley and Batley with just under half of the area Lodges being based in the two Masonic Halls in Leeds.
As with all areas there are a number of ‘support ‘groups.
There is currently a team of 27 Liaison Officers who take responsibility for Lodges. A Charity Committee headed by W Bro Jim Watson, four mentoring Co-ordinators, whose details and Lodge responsibilities can be found in the Secretariat section.
Our Royal Arch link is through E Comp David Boyle, Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals, whilst the Communications Committee members with responsibility for Area 5 are W Bro’s Kevin Gould and Paul Nash. Also we have three Almoner Assistants, W Bro’s John Edmunds, Stephen Smith and Norman Forsyth.
The new Leeds Lodge No 9867 was consecrated only in 2011 and meets in Albion Place in Leeds to provide a base for Brethren visiting, living or working in the City Centre.
One of my additional roles is to oversee the Universities Scheme for the Province encompassing the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, Huddersfield and Bradford. Each of the Universities has a Lodge dedicated to assisting Students who may be interested in learning more about Freemasonry and have special arrangements for membership.
The Leeds and District Lodge of Installed Masters No 7918 is a fully constituted Lodge but we also have three Installed Masters Associations the, Wakefield, I. M. A., Castleford and Pontefract, I.M.A. and the Dewsbury and Spen Valley, I.M.A.
