Charity Begins at Home

This was the thought uppermost in W Bro John Winder of Horsford Lodge No 5339 when he received a surprise award.

W Bro Winder of Winder Carpets at Idle in Bradford has been a director of the independent national association of carpet retailers known as “The Associated Carpet Group Limited” for 29 years.

The association was formed to give the smaller independent carpet retailers a similar buying power to the large multiple retailers so as to allow them to compete on an even playing field as it were. In addition to the AGM the directors hold approximately 6 other meetings throughout the year and normally finish off the evening with a raffle to raise money for worthwhile causes.

The Annual General Meeting and conference of The Associated Carpet Group this year took place on Saturday 21st June at Coombe Abbey, Coventry, Warwickshire, followed in the evening by a Mediaeval Banquet.

During the event W Bro Winder, to his surprise, was called forward by one of the association members Peter Pithie coincidentally, a brother in a Coventry Lodge, to be presented with the inaugural Alan Ashworth Memorial Shield for 29 years outstanding service to the Association. W Bro Winder states it was very touching and indeed a great honour to be the first recipient of the award.

In addition to being a director for 29 years W Bro Winder has also served a term as President of the Association.

The award consisted of the Memorial Shield and also a cheque for £250 to be presented to the charity of his choice and W Bro Winder being who he is immediately thought “Charity begins at Home” so where better to donate the £250 but to Masonic Charities, which he immediately passed it on to W Bro Bob Naylor the Lodge Charity Steward.
