The Lodge of Benevolence demonstration ceremony from 1759
The Lodge of Benevolence No.5612 celebrated the end of the year 2012 in traditional style, On Thursday December the 13th, the regular Lodge meeting was opened and closed and was immediately followed by a demonstration of a ceremony from the time of George the Second, 1759, from a script researched, many years ago by a Past Master of the Lodge, W. Bro. A. G Broadhead PPJGW.
The acting officers of the Lodge entered the Temple dressed in the costumes of the year and took their places at a table in the centre on which was placed a number of antique Masonic objects supplied by W, Bro. K. Knapton PPJGW.
After the ceremony, the tradition was continued at the Festive Board, the Master and his officers taking their place at a central table complete with wassail bowl and pigs head. During a very convivial evening, forfeits were extracted from the Brethren for infringement of a set of light-hearted rules devised for the enrichment of the Almoners fund.
Two days later, on Saturday 15th, the Lodge Christmas Party took place. This was well attended by Brethren, their Ladies and guests, entertainment being provided by W. Bro. Ray and Mrs. Eileen Sheller and by disc jockey, Stuart Greasley. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
On the following Thursday, Benevolence tradition was continued. The evening was presided over by our oldest member, Bro. Robert Scrimshaw, PPGStd.B. who, despite being a member for 41 years, has never been through the Chair. The Lodge was opened and closed, and, at the ensuing festive board, 90 year old W. Bro. Scrimshaw opened proceedings with a series of very lively comic stories, following the tradition of this last Lodge meeting that every Brother present entertains the assembly. A wealth of unsuspecting talent amongst the Brethren was revealed! The evening was closed by yet another failed attempt to sing the carol “Hail Smiling Morn”!
Thus ended the year 2012 and the Master W. Bro Phillip Crampton and his Brethren look forward to another successful year and extend fraternal greetings to all our friends and Brethren throughout the Province.
