The Prestonian Lecture 2009

Go and do thou likewise:
English Masonic Processions from the 18th to the 20th Centuries

W Bro Dr. John Wade, PProvJGW will deliver the Prestonian Lecture for 2009 at Castle Grove Masonic Hall on Thursday 30th Sept 2010, 6.30pm

W. Bro. Dr. John Wade is a member of a number of Lodges, Chapters and other Orders in the Provinces of Yorkshire West Riding and Derbyshire and was installed as Master of Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076 for 2009-2010.

In his paper, W. Bro. Wade looks at Masonic Processions, which were a regular occurrence in many parts of England from the first quarter of the eighteenth century to the immediate pre-second world war period in the late 1930s.

The paper surveys public processions of Masons over 2 centuries and examines the association of civic, ecclesiastical and Masonic bodies in public ceremonies of foundation stone laying, the dedication of completed buildings and other occasions for public thanksgiving.

All Masons are very welcome to attend – the Leeds and District Lodge of Installed Masters will be delighted to offer a warm welcome to all those who wish to hear W. Bro. Wade’s fascinating lecture.

The price of the meal will be £14

Lodge & Chapter Almoners Workshops

The introduction of the Freemasonry Cares for You initiative has greatly enhanced understanding in the Province about the work of the Charities; who qualifies for help and how to apply for that help.  The DVD has been widely shown; the Short Guide to Masonic Support has been widely distributed and knowledge of the support available to Almoners has been increased.

The final in the current series of workshops will be on11th April 2011 at Spring Bank Place.

The meeting will help to build on the information you already hold and provide an opportunity for you to discuss informally with your Almoner colleagues any issues you may have. If you wish to raise a specific topic/case it would be useful if you could let me have any details beforehand.  Brethren who are not Almoners but who are interested in the Almoner’s role for the future, or who would like to become involved in helping their Lodge Almoner, are welcome to attend.

New Zealand Earthquake Relief Efforts

grand-charity-small

In response to the earthquake, which took place last weekend on the South Island of New Zealand, the President of the Grand Charity has approved an emergency grant of £10,000 to the District Grand Lodge of South Island, NZ.

These funds are being directed to the Mayor of Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund, to help the wider community with their immediate needs following the earthquake.

Some 100,000 buildings were destroyed in the earthquake, leaving many people displaced and without access to their homes, schools and places of work.
In parallel with support for wider relief efforts, The Freemasons’ Grand Charity has offered to assist any of the 340 individual Freemasons under the United Grand Lodge of England, plus widows or their other dependants, who have been affected by these events, through Masonic Relief Grants to assist with their immediate needs.
